Hi, I’m sarah moran.

I received my PhD in the History of Art and Architecture from Brown University in 2010, and spent the next 12 years of my academic career in Europe. I’ve held a number of research and teaching positions in Switzerland, Belgium, and the Netherlands, and also got a few grants during that time. From 2018 to 2022 I was Associate Professor of Art History at Utrecht University. I left that position to pursue new challenges, including museum curating, scholarly editing, and consulting.

During all of my international experience I’ve learned the ins and outs of academic systems in the US and in Europe, their institutional structures, funding, types of jobs, values, assumptions, and terminologies. These foundational elements vary widely across countries, and yet their differences remain largely invisible - poorly understood and almost never discussed. In today’s incredibly competitive academic environment that means missing out on crucial opportunities.

I started Higher Edventure as the first and only focused resource of information on European academic systems for foreign scholars. I want to give talented researchers the knowledge they need to find jobs and grants, recognize and market their unique skills, and - if they choose to take the international leap - define and pursue the specific goals that will pave the way for a successful academic career abroad.
